Blepharitis is an ophthalmologic condition characterized by an inflammation of the eyelid margins. Anterior blepharitis is usually associated with an infection that produces an overgrowth of bacteria that create a biofilm that serves as food for the Demodex causing inflammation of the eyelids.
Meibomian gland dysfunction also contributes to this inflammation, causing posterior blepharitis. Viral etiology, such as Herpes simplex and Varicella zoster is also possible, as well as seborrheic diseases. All these etiologies give rise to a commonly chronic blepharitis that may even be associated with Dry Eye.
